WOMAN KILLED IN PURSUIT

A 23-MILE-HIGH SPEED PURSUIT ENDED IN A FATAL CRASH IN JOHNSON CITY.  IT STARTED FRIDAY NIGHT IN TUSCULUM—AND ENDED ON WEST MARKET STREET—AS THE VEHICLE POLICE WERE PURSUING SLAMMED INTO THE BACK OF A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY 22-YEAR-OLD ANNA PEARSON OF AFTON.  THE IMPACT SENT HER VEHICLE INTO A DITCH.  THE TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL SAYS 21-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN MORROW OF MOSHEIM WAS SPEEDING ON HIGHWAY 11-E—AND WOULDN’T STOP—WITH SPEEDS AT TIMES TOPPING 100 MILES PER HOUR.  MORROW WAS INJURED AND RECEIVED MEDICAL TREATMENT.  HE’LL FACE SEVERAL CHARGES.

COVID-19—HOSPITALIZATIONS

TENNESSEE HEALTH COMMISSIONER DR. LISA PIERCEY SAYS SHE’S NOT ALARMED ABOUT AN UPTICK IN COVID-19 CASE NUMBERS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS.  DURING A MEDIA BRIEFING SHE SAID MOST OF THE INCREASE IN THE STATE IS IN NORTHEAST TENNESSEE—AND THERE’S REALLY NO SPECIFIC REASON.   SHE ALSO SAYS WHILE IT’S NOT HERE YET, IT’S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE OMICRON VARIANT IS IN TENNESSEE.  SHE SAYS IT’S IN AT LEAST ONE BORDER STATE.

COVID-19—CASE NUMBERS

THERE WERE 560 NEW COVID-19 CASES IN NORTHEAST TENNESSEE OVER THE WEEKEND—AND THAT BRINGS THE 7 DAY NEW CASE RATE TO ITS HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE LATE SEPTEMBER.  THERE WERE FOUR NEW DEATHS REPORTED—THREE IN SULLIVAN COUNTY AND ONE IN HAWKINS COUNTY.  STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE WATCHING AN INCREASE IN CASE NUMBERS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS IN THE TRI-CITIES REGION.

PART OF CARROLL CREEK TO BE CLOSED TODAY

A PART OF CARROLL CREEK ROAD IN JOHNSON CITY WILL BE CLOSED AGAIN TODAY FOR SEWER LINE WORK.  THE ROAD WILL BE CLOSED AT 2067 CARROLL CREEK AND WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL WORK IS FINISHED.  EMERGENCY TRAFFIC WILL BE ABLE TO PASS.

KINGSPORT SHOOTING

KINGSPORT POLICE ARE ASKING FOR HELP—AFTER A SHOOTING LAST MONTH.  IT HAPPENED NOVEMBER 29TH IN THE 900 BLOCK OF DALE STREET.  OFFICERS FOUND EVIDENCE OF A SHOOTING ON THE SIDEWALK AND IN THE STREET IN FRONT OF A HOME.  A 73-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS FOUND AT A NEARBY INTERSECTION WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE LEG.  HE WAS TREATED AND RELEASED FROM A HOSPITAL.  IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION, CONTACT KINGSPORT POLICE.

MAN FACES CHARGES

A KINGSPORT MAN FACES SEVERAL CHARGES AFTER A POLICE PURSUIT IN TWO STATES.  SULLIVAN COUNTY DEPUTIES TRIED TO MAKE A TRAFFIC STOP ON JOHN B. DENNIS IN KINGSPORT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAD A SWAPPED LICENSE TAG.  THE PONTIAC SPED OFF AND LATER DEPUTIES SAW THE VEHICLE ON CHADWELL ROAD.  DAKOTA ORFIELD ALLEGEDLY VEERED TOWARD A DEPUTY AND THEN TRAVELED INTO VIRGINIA IN SCOTT AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES.  VIRGINIA STATE POLICE USED SPIKE STRIPS TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN BRISTOL. ORFIELD WAS TAKEN TO THE SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA REGIONAL JAIL IN DUFFIELD.

MAN KILLED

VIRGINIA STATE POLICE HAVE IDENTIFIED A MAN KILLED NOVEMBER 29TH IN BRISTOL AFTER HE WAS HIT BY TWO VEHICLES.  63-YEAR-OLD EDWARD HENEGAR OF VIRGINIA BEACH WAS WALKING IN THE TRAVEL LANE OF THE EXIT 5 RAMP WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A CHRYSLER AND A LEXUS.  HENEGAR DIED AT THE SCENE.  HE WASN’T WEARING ANY REFLECTIVE GEAR AND NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN PLACED.

SOME JOHNSON CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBERS HAVE VOICED CONCERN ABOUT PARTISAN ELECTIONS.  A NEW STATE LAW ALLOWS PARTISAN SCHOOL BOARD RACES—IF COUNTY POLITICAL PARTIES DECIDE TO RUN CANDIDATES.   REPUBLICANS PLAN TO HOLD A PRIMARY WHILE DEMOCRATS HAVE UNTIL FRIDAY TO DETERMINE HOW TO SELECT CANDIDATES. 

HELP WANTED—KINGSPORT FIRE

THE KINGSPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT IS HIRING.  APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED FOR A NUMBER OF POSITIONS—AS THERE ARE SEVERAL OPENINGS—AFTER SOME LONG-TIME FIREFIGHTERS PLAN TO RETIRE.  APPLICATIONS CAN BE SUBMITTED THROUGH THE CITY’S ONLINE JOB PORTAL.  FIREFIGHTER TESTING IS SET FOR JANUARY 12TH.

MAN FACES CHARGES AFTER DISTURBANCE

A JOHNSON CITY MAN FACES SEVERAL CHARGES—AFTER A DISTURBANCE AT A MOTEL.  POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE JOHNSON INN ON WEST MARKET.  THE VICTIMS SAID JOSE MARQUEZ HAD BEEN BEATING ON THE DOOR AND WINDOW AND WANTING TO BE LET IN.  MARQUEZ ALLEGEDLY POINTED A SHOTGUN AND THEN LEFT.  OFFICERS FOUND MARQUEZ IN HIS ROOM WITH THE WEAPON.  HE’S CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, PROHIBITED WEAPON AND PUBLIC INTOXICATION AND WILL BE IN COURT TODAY.
