BRISTOL HOMICIDE

A SULLIVAN COUNTY MAN IS CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS MOTHER.  SATURDAY, SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES FOUND 57-YEAR-OLD JILL SLY OF CLARK DRIVE IN BRISTOL WITH HEAD AND FACE INJURIES AND SHE DIED AT A HOSPITAL.  26-YEAR OLD BENJAMIN OLIVER SLY IS CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AS HE ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED ANOTHER WOMAN WHO’D GONE TO CHECK ON HIS MOTHER.  BENJAMIN SLY WAS ARRAIGNED MONDAY IN SESSIONS COURT AND IS HELD ON $1-MILLION DOLLARS BOND.  HIS NEXT COURT DATE IS FEBRUARY 15. 

DICKENSON BODY IDENTIFIED

AUTHORITIES HAVE IDENTIFIED A BODY FOUND SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN DICKENSON COUNTY VIRGINIA.  THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS 60-YEAR-OLD DAVID GLENN BOWMAN OF GRUNDY WAS FOUND OFF A TRAIL BY AN A-T-V RIDER.  VIRGINIA STATE POLICE AND THE BUCHANAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE ARE HELPING WITH THE INVESTIGATION SINCE BOWMAN’S BODY WAS FOUND SO CLOSE TO THE COUNTY LINE.

AREA POLICE DEPARTMENTS CONTINUE TO URGE YOU TO LOCK YOUR VEHICLES.  THIS COMES AFTER A RASH OF THEFTS FROM UNLOCKED VEHICLES AT SEVERAL APARTMENT COMPLEXES IN BRISTOL VIRGINIA.  POLICE SAY SEVERAL ITEMS WERE TAKEN, INCLUDING LAPTOPS, PHONES AND CLOTHING.  ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE IS LOCKED, DON’T LEAVE THINGS OF VALUE IN PLAIN SIGHT AND TRY TO PARK IN A LIT AREA OR WHERE LIGHT FROM YOUR HOUSE WILL SHINE ON IT.  ALSO, VIDEO CAMERAS CAN HELP POLICE AND THEY’LL ALSO LET YOU KNOW IF ANYONE IS AROUND YOUR HOUSE.

TN—STATE OF THE STATE

TENNESSEE GOVERNOR BILL LEE THIS EVENING WILL DELIVER HIS FIFTH “STATE OF THE STATE” ADDRESS.  ONE INITIATIVE HE’LL TOUCH ON IS A PLAN TO RELIEVE CONGESTION ON THE STATE’S ROADWAYS—AND HE’S PROPOSING “CHOICE LANES”—AS PART OF A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP–WHICH WOULD ADD LANES AND GIVE DRIVERS THE CHOICE TO PAY FOR DRIVING IN THE NEW LANES.   THE GOVERNOR WILL ALSO CALL FOR A CONSERVATION PLAN—ONE THAT BALANCES ECONOMIC GROWTH WITH A PLAN TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT.  THE GOVERNOR’S ADDRESS BEGINS AT 7 THIS EVENING.

MAN SURRENDERS AFTER BARRICADING HIMSELF

THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES AFTER A MAN BARRICADED HIMSELF IN A HOUSE IN GREENEVILLE.  IT HAPPENED SATURDAY ON CARSON STREET AND POLICE WERE CALLED ABOUT A PERSON EXPERIENCING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS.  THE SITUATION WAS RESOLVED PEACEFULLY AND THE PERSON WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL FOR EVALUATION.

YOUTH VAPING BILL

A HAWKINS COUNTY STATE LAWMAKER HAS FILED A BILL TO HELP COMBAT VAPING IN SCHOOLS.  REPRESENTATIVE GARY HICKS IS THE SPONSOR AND SAYS THE BILL ISN’T TO CRIMINALIZE STUDENTS, BUT TO HELP THEM REALIZE THE DANGERS OF VAPING.  HE ALSO SAYS HAVING STUDENTS PAY A SMALL FINE AND PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK DOESN’T SEEM TO ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM.  HICKS ALSO SAYS HE WANTS TO HEAR FROM STAKEHOLDERS, SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND PARENTS ABOUT CONCERNS IN AN EFFORT TO RE-WORK THE LEGISLATION.

CALIFORNIA TRIO PLEADS IN WISE FENTANYL OVERDOSES

THREE CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS HAVE PLEADED GUILTY TO SUPPLYING FENTANYL CONNNECTED TO OVERDOSES IN WISE COUNTY VIRGINIA.  ALEXANDER ORTIZ, DESTINY PEREZ AND JORGE PEREZ JUNIOR EACH PLEADED AFTER SELLING THOUSANDS OF PILLS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES, INCLUDING TO CO-CONSIPIRATOR PAUL MASON PERKINS IN BIG STONE GAP.  IN TURN, HE ALLEGEDLY SOLD THE PILLS IN WISE COUNTY AND THOSE PILLS WERE LINKED TO A COUPLE OF TEENAGE OVERDOSES IN 2021.  ORTIZ FACES A 15-YEAR SENTENCE, WHILE AT LEAST 10 YEARS AWAITS JORGE PEREZ AND DESTINY PEREZ.
