Wonderwall is getting another moment in the spotlight as England’s World Cup run brings the Oasis classic back into heavy rotation.
New streaming data released ahead of England’s June 23 match against Ghana showed UK listens to the 1995 single rising by 50 percent. The increase followed a widely shared scene after England’s 4-2 win over Croatia, when supporters sang Wonderwall in the stadium, and several players joined in or reacted from the pitch.
Liam Gallagher responded in typical direct fashion, calling the song a classic and praising his own vocal performance on it.
The moment has added to the song’s long connection with football culture. England players, including Harry Kane and Declan Rice described the post-match singalong as emotional, with Rice pointing to the unusual setting of hearing the crowd sing it in Dallas.
Wonderwall remains one of Oasis’ most recognizable songs. It reached Number Two in the UK when it was first released and has continued to be one of the most-streamed British songs from the 1990s.
