Baez Added to White House Civil Rights Night
Joan Baez has been added to the roster of the PBS special, "In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement," which will air on Thursday, February 11th.
The event will also include Bob Dylan, whom she partnered with in 1963 for the March on Washington, one of the most prominent civil rights rallies at the time.
The event will be hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and will also include readings and songs from the Civil Rights era.
Dylan and Baez performed "When the Ship Comes In" at the 1963 march, which also included Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful "I Have a Dream" speech.
It is still unclear whether Baez will perform with Dylan at the event, though three original members of the Freedom Singers,
Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, Rutha Harris and Charles Neblett, have reunited for the show.
In 1975 Baez was a member of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue troupe, and toured with him again in 1984.
Others scheduled to perform at the "In Performance" night include John Mellencamp, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Seal, Natalie Cole, John Legend, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Yolanda Adams.
Guest speakers will feature Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Queen Latifah and Joanne Woodward.
